The Peace Prayer ascribed to St. Francis, and some of his authentic writings, in English and old Italian.

One of my clients suggested this Prayer, and I was very happy to try it, because it’s a beautiful prayer, and because I have long loved St. Francis, this humble, radiant beggar, the Italian, Christian Baal Shem Tov, as I see him, a man who loved every blade of grass and every drop of rain as direct expression of God’s splendor and magnanimity, just like the Baal Shem Tov did many years later.

The so-called Peace Prayer of St. Francis was not really written by him. It appeared first in the French magazine La Clochette in 1912, written by an unknown author. But since its spirit is so close to St. Francis’ spirit and poetry, I used it in juxtaposition with his authentic poetry, the famous Canticle of the Sun, both in English and in the original, Umbrian dialect.

I made two versions of it, in very different styles, both trying to express some of St. Francis’ intimate closeness and gratitude to the sun; the moon and stars; the earth and its inhabitants; the various kinds of weather; water, and fire.
